Battling Biofilms: A New Approach to Studying Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global concern. Overprescribing and overusing various drugs contributes to the deepening of this problem. One of the model microorganisms in which this phenomenon is of a high importance is Helicobacter pylori, a common bacterium that causes a variety of gastric pathologies.

To keep pace with the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, Assistant Professor Dr. Paweł Krzyżek, has developed a high-throughput method to grow H. pylori biofilms in a stomach-like environment.

Dr. Krzyżek shares insights on:

1. Biofilm development of Helicobacter pylori strains and the influence of antibiotics on its parameters.
2. Comparative analysis of biofilm properties of various species of microbes.
3. Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of novel compounds
